Imagine being thrown off the bed by a hurricane during the night. This could happen if you are in the path of a hurricane. Hurricanes are powerful storms that can harm people, plants, and animals. In this essay I am going to talk about how a hurricane is a powerful storm, how scientists know how deadly a hurricane is, and how to get prepared.
A hurricane is a powerful storm. Hurricanes are formed over warm ocean water and the wind must be blowing in the same direction and at the same speed. These dreaded storms can destroy cars, roads, train tracks, and they can even lift up houses. These whirlwinds can spread over hundreds of miles wide. After a destructive hurricane makes its way through a city, it can raze all the buildings in the entire town. These storms usually form in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea.
Scientists study how big a hurricane is and how deadly it is. These scientists categorize these harsh windstorms from 1 to 5, 1 being the mildest and 5 being most severe. A hurricane category 5 could put the country’s economy in grave peril. The winds from these jarring super storms can go up to 74 mph-155mph. When a hurricane is coming, the scientists fly over the storm to get data to help predict the weather path and how strong it is. They use this data to warn people if it is necessary to leave their houses if the hurricane is dangerous. Without these warnings, people’s lives would be filled with anguish as they are unexpectedly hit by these deadly storms.
Even though the storm is dangerous, many people have survived them by being prepared before the storm arrives. The first thing people should do to prepare for a hurricane is by making an escape plan especially if the hurricane is a category 5. Also, get emergency food and water supplies because stores can be closed for days. Next, get medical supplies just in case someone gets hurt and flashlights with extra batteries just in case the power goes out. Lastly, keep personal items and important documents in plastic storage boxes just in case the house gets flooded.
Hurricanes are powerful storms that can destroy and endanger many lives. Scientists study these storms and warn people before they arrive. This way people can prepare for these spinning storms and survive for many days.
